Wedding Album vs Photo Book: What's the Difference?
A wedding album is typically a premium, hand-bound keepsake with thick, rigid pages and lay-flat spreads, built to last for decades. A photo book is usually a lighter, printed-and-bound book with thinner pages and a lower price. The main differences come down to page thickness, binding, lay-flat capability, and cost.
What is a wedding album?
Traditional wedding albums use thick, rigid pages — often mounted photographic prints — and premium covers in leather or linen. The pages lie completely flat, so a single image can stretch across a full spread. They feel substantial, they last, and they're priced as heirlooms.
What is a photo book?
A photo book is printed and bound much like a hardcover book, with thinner pages and a lighter feel. It's more affordable, easy to display on a shelf or coffee table, and — when it's well designed — every bit as beautiful a way to relive your day.
The key differences at a glance
- Page thickness: rigid, board-style pages (album) vs. thinner printed pages (book).
- Lay-flat: albums almost always lie flat; photo books may have a small center gutter unless you choose a layflat upgrade.
- Binding & materials: hand-bound leather or linen (album) vs. printed hardcover or softcover (book).
- Durability: both last, but album pages resist wear and handling longer.
- Price: albums cost more; photo books are the budget-friendlier choice.
What about layflat?
Layflat is the upgrade that blurs the line between the two. In a layflat book the pages open completely flat, so a single photo can span both pages of a spread without being split by the center gutter — the album look, in book form.
Which one should you choose?
If you want a true heirloom and the budget allows, a premium album is hard to beat. If you want something beautiful, displayable, and easier on the budget, a well-designed photo book is the sweet spot. Either way, you don't design it alone: you add your own photos and as many pages as you like, and our team professionally designs the book by hand, with layouts made to complement your photos.
